India’s Chemical Industry

India’s Chemical Industry
Indias chemical industry is an integral part of the Indian economy. It is indeed the oldest and fastest growing industry which has touched every sector of consumer durables. From kitchen items to toiletries to agrochemicals to cosmetics, plastics and pesticides, Indias chemical industry currently produces more than 60,000 business products. Not only it provides people with daily necessities, but also contributing to industrial and economic growth of India since independence was achieved in 1947.

The industry covers a broad spectrum of categories that includes organic and inorganic chemicals (used in alkalies, fertilizers, detergents, and glass), Drugs and pharmaceuticals, Plastics and petrochemicals, dyes and pigments, engineering plastics and specialty chemicals, pesticides and agrochemicals and fertilizers.

In terms of volume, drugs and pharmaceutical sector of Indian chemical industry holds the fouth place in the world whereas the plastic and petrochemical sector is the fastest growing sector among all these.

Chemical industries do not signify only the manufacturing companies but also a wide variety of organizations are involved in the distribution chain between chemical producing companies and the industries using ‘chemical substances’.

There are many chemical industries that manufacture and distribute their products on a large scale. Even there are many other dealers who operate their wholesale business in such products. Now-a-days, there are many industries which use different type of chemicals in the manufacturing process. These firms need to purchase the chemicals on wholesale basis so that they can save their cost and maximize their profit ratio. For such companies the timely supply of the raw material in perfect condition is a must. This task is taken up by the traders and agents.

Thus, the chemical distribution industry not only includes chemical manufacturers and their distributors, but also chemical traders, agents, export/import houses and a number of other suppliers providing these companies with added value products or services e.g. warehousing, logistics, plant & equipment.

Chemical distributors buy and sell chemicals from producers. They take title to the goods, responsibility for stocking and warehousing, before selling the products on to their customers. Their responsibility of storing the chemical is as tedious as the production factories. They have to pay the same attention to the problem arising in the storage of the chemicals as that is paid to those arising from the production in the factories.
